In this upcoming film starring Sarah I used a big ass spotlight at the top corner of the bed to light her. It was broad daylight so I turned the shutter to 4000 and set the ISO to 100. That took all the light out of the viewfinder except what was created but the spotlight. This produced a pretty good raw shot and I was pretty much happy with it. The only thing I didn’t like was that it was basically a 2 color image- reds and yellows. 2 color images always seem a bit flatter to me. So I went into the levels again and added some blue into the darks.

That introduced that purple color that gave the film just enough dimension to feel special. I used Selective Color to add more yellow into the yellows. Then I added a pretty dark vignette- a dark halo around the edge of the frame. That further helped to focus your attention on the center portion of the frame and added to the old school look I always try to keep in mind. The vignette I used is in the Overlay transfer mode so it not only darkens the edges, it also over saturates or crushes the edge colors. I usually pull it back a bit so there is no distortion in the color but for a film like Blaze more is more.

I find that more and more I use photoshop less and less. I’m in after effects all day doing some of the same things I used to do to photos, to video. It’s of course impossible to do the same things even tho you can import your adjustment layers from photoshop… it’s never the same. Video is a different beast because it moves. You can’t spend hours on one shot. I miss that. With video there are at least 24 shots per second. So you have to think in broad strokes and try to keep the source video lit the same throughout so your adjustments have the same affect throughout. Every now and then I’m going to share some of the things I do to create the looks.

In this upcoming film with Michelle I only used the lamps in the room to light it (I do that often). I rarely use gels, lens filters or anything physical to adjust the shot. I just try to get really close to something I like in the camera and make up the diff in post.
The shadows were a bit dark and the whole room felt too warm, too yellow in the video so I cooled it off using the blue channel in Levels. Messing with the sliders can create some cool moods by adding blue into the darks. I then desaturated the video using Hue & Saturation and went into the yellows and turned up the lightness and saturation. That move lightened up the dark browns in her hair making it more golden while keeping the blacks in the shot black. It turned out to be a subtle but nice correction.
At the end of the day it’s always a lot of tweaking and watching for the right feeling.
